lyrics

Lost Colony

In the year of our lord 1584
England set sail for New World shores
First colony settled in claim of their queen
Roanoke Isle who knew what fate would bring

Chorus
Life was hard And filled with strife
Trying to balance death and life
Winters harsh And filled with plague
Colony’s cost took its toll in spades
Verse 2
Forced return to England for supplies
Governor set out midst plaintive cries
Sent quickly cross Atlantic on his way
Colonists bound to face all Come what may

Chorus
Colony lost without a trace
New world last resting place
Supply ship returned from the sea
What they found was a mystery

Upon his return governor’s affright
Deserted village no grave markers in sight
What malady or massacre did destiny hold
None remained from whom the tale could be told

Chorus
Colony lost without a trace
No greater puzzle had the governor faced
Nary a clue what their fate may be
Save for the carving on a solitary tree-
